The Latest....

Doggie Update:

Ruby has recovered beautifully from her surgery. Our finances are still recovering (between the 2 dogs, we spent $1,200 at the vet during the month of December). Zoinks, Shaggy!

Diva's Destructive Ways: yesterday, the kids and I went out to run errands and his some post-Christmas sales. We were gone 2 hours, tops. We came home to find:

  1. Destroyed earmuffs
  2. Shredded dustcover for one of my favorite books (the book itself is still missing... I'm wondering if it was ingested...)
  3. The owners manual for my new camera - shredded
  4. A vacuum cleaner attachment (the little brush thing - I never use it anyway, so it's no great loss) - CHEWED beyond recognition
  5. A new sketchpad - destroyed.

Amazing, that dog. Good thing she is well-loved!

Yes, she is a sweetheart - they BOTH are! There are videos on this blog too... Diva and Ruby are our canine "girls"! We used to have a cat too, but she passed away about a year and a half ago.

Hello to your canine girls!

Hey, I'm wondering, how much time does Diva spend every day running/walking hard? Retrievers and collies are notorious for being destructive in their early years without a release for their puppy energy. If you can get her out for at least an hour every day and run with her/play fetch/walk or hike hard, I promise you she will be a different Diva. Not only will you have your home back, but she'll also be much more relaxed and mellow. Unfortunately, they have that bottomless pit of energy for about the first 4 to 6 years of their lives. Yay for you!

Hey KBL! Our backyard is fairly large and fenced in - Diva and Ruby spend a good bit of their day out there, but (candidly) Diva probably would benefit from a 30 minute jog through the neighborhood each day (and my big behind would probabaly benefit from it as well!) I just need to "make it happen".
(We had this same situation with Chloe.... her "destructive powers" peaked at 9 months - oh how CLEARLY I remember, even though it was 15 years ago!).

Wow, if I were a dog I would want to live in your house with that big backyard! Every dog should have one, don't you think!? :-)

You know, the interesting thing about dogs, very similar to humans, is that they think of the backyard as just an extension of their home, their territory. Frolicking about back there doesn't translate into work and exercise for them. It is the equivalent of us playing a football video game vs. going out and physically playing football for fun.

Jeez, I sound like Cesar Milan now, but it is so true. I have known hundreds of dogs in my time and it has been true for all of them. They need to get out and mentally stimulate themselves through their noses and their muscles.

Even with dogs as old as ours, and we have a backyard for them, if it is yucky out for a couple of days and they don't get to go to the park, they get antsy. They need exercise and to get out of the house. We take them to the park every darned day for an hour because that makes them less likely to drive us batty in the house. Sometimes it sucks because we're exhausted after work, but it is what we knew we'd take on if we wanted to have doggies.

Hopefully you'll be able to get Diva out when you're able. She *definitely* needs to get out for daily, sustained exercise. Don't we all!?
